I was up late late late last night reminiscing about 'E.T.' - Wikipedia tells me that it may well be somewhat plagiarised from Satyajit Ray's script for the unproduced 'The Alien'. I did not know that. Apparently, I'm related to Ray through my mum's side. I'll get round to suing Steven Spielberg later. For now, enjoy the trailer to the film he's producing, the JJ Abrams-directed 'Super 8'.

In case, you've not kept up, here's an official plot synopsis (which doesn't give that much away): "In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined."

I wasn't that impressed by the thirty second Superbowl spot we saw about a month ago but this new trailer is great - it doesn't spoil the movie by showing the alien yet evokes the atmosphere of 'Super 8'. In many senses, it's similar to Abrams' 'Cloverfield' but while that fully immersed the viewer in the situation, this is gives you more of the sense of wonderment (not sure this was a word before, it is now) of an 'E.T.'

'Super 8' hits US cinemas in June and the UK in August.
