Words: Saam Das
A couple of years ago, I watched an American indie drama called 'The Dish And The Spoon' during the BFI London Film Festival. I haven't really thought much about it since then but it transpires that afternoon in the Curzon Soho was the first time I heard Years & Years. Their latest effort, 'Traps', is out on Kitsuné on 22nd September.
It turns out that Years & Years' frontman Olly Alexander is actually quite the thesp, having been one of the whimsical leads of 'The Dish And The Spoon - and set to be in forthcoming Belle & Sebastian-related musical 'God Help The Girl'. New single 'Traps' starts off as a bit of an ode to Sigur Ros (let's say 'Ágætis byrjun'-era) before going into a heavier dance mode.
Lyrically and melodically, 'Traps' often seems to echo Biffy Clyro's 'Mountains' - which could be seen as a negative but seeing as I think that's one of the finest power ballads of the last decade, I'm down with the situation. Have a listen to the engaging electro-pop of 'Traps', and previous single 'I Wish I Knew' below.
