If you thought that end of year lists were history (winking smiley) by now then you'd be sorely wrong. We adopt an overly careful and considered approach when putting our lists together. We think the effort is worthwhile. Judge for yourselves below with our favourite songs of 2012 featuring everyone from big hitters like Bobby Womack and Arctic Monkeys to upcomers Mt. Wolf and LULS.

A band that has caught much more than just my own personal preference over the last couple of months are newcomers Dora Brilliant. The band came to fruition as a result of two members previously playing in a band called HOST, who were signed to Hitback records (home of indie favourites Spearmint). They've flown under the radar since then but recently released their impressive second album.

Young Kato are an alternative pop sextet from Cheltenham and Birmingham, with not a qualm in the world about wearing the words POP MUSIC proudly on their sleeves. Although only averaging an age of 18, they have already received praise from the likes of Annie Nightingale and Gary Powell, drummer of The Libertines, as well as being donned "The Smiths with attitude".

My Preserver - 'Revolutions In The Head' (UK Release: 5 Nov '12) // Words: Howard Gorman

London based 4-piece My Preserver formed back in 2007 but it was not until 2012 that their first official release appeared in the form of debut single 'King Jesus'. On the back of such a concise back catalogue the band snagged both XFM plaudits and a Kerrang! magazine feature, in which they were professed as “One of the most exciting – and important – new British bands to emerge this year”. Such hype is always hard to match but the debut album 'Revolutions In The Head' should put any doubters to bed.

As soon as the music video to Mancunian four-piece SHINIES’ second single 'Ennui' begins, with a cassette inserted into one of those old eighties recorders, it was clear that we were in for a good old bit of reminiscing. If you’re old enough to recall the classic children’s gameshow 'Fun House' then you’re in for a real treat. The band have their mean way with 90s legend Pat Sharp.

Already labelled as the saviours of indie rock after only having a couple of tracks to their name on the net, Palma Violets really have their work cut out to live up to the hype. 'Best Of Friends' is the band’s first single proper, aptly blending garage and indie rock.

The Little Philistines - 'Nuclear Envelope' (UK Release: 8 Oct '12) // Words: Howard Gorman

What caught my attention on pushing play were the wired vocals, harking back to adolescent years, popping zits to the sound of Andy Partridge on the radio, and pop hooks as sugary sweet as Madness and Dexy’s Midnight Runners. Sure, they may appear obfuscated in the fashionable fanfares of the eighties, but, 'Nuclear Envelope' is actually much more indebted to the naughty nineties.

Dog Is Dead - 'All Our Favourite Stories' (UK Release: 8 Oct '12) // Words: Howard Gorman

All Our Favourite Stories album

The signature sound of Dog Is Dead has garnered them a trusty following, and an excellent live reputation due to their brilliant festival performances. Touted by critics as stars in waiting (and one of our tips for 2011), their debut album finds them facing quite the challenge. According to the band, this long player is the crowning touch of their combined experiences, and it was crux for them to write in this anecdotal style. So, are their favourite stories worth listening to?
