'Episodes' (2011) 'Episode 3'

SYNOPSIS: "Comedy. Beverly (Tamsin Greig) can't stand Matt LeBlanc and the feeling is mutual, but after leaving Sean (Stephen Mangan) to look after him, she begins to feel excluded by her husband's new bromance." (bbc.co.uk)

We’re now three episodes into 'Episodes' and, after having established the ground rules, I’m beginning to wonder if we can really expect much more from the show. Matt LeBlanc continues to deftly manipulate British writers Sean and Bev by pitching them against one another, Merc the network exec continues to be incredibly two-faced and tactless, Sean and Bev continue to argue about whether they should stick it out or pack it all in and go home... so far so predictable.

That’s not to say that there’s a lack of laughs, but I feel like my innate love of Mangan and Greig (and their easy chemistry) is making me more tolerant of some of the times the show falls a bit flat. However, I did find Sean’s extended description of LeBlanc’s cock, after having been witness to it in a toilets of a club in Las Vegas, hilarious (“It could attack a city!”), but then I do have a pretty juvenile sense of humour and the whole sequence reminded me of 'Green Wing' somewhat. If LeBlanc’s “sea creature” cock becomes a running theme, though, then it could get pretty tiresome pretty quickly.

Next week appears to build on Matt and Sean’s "bromance", leaving Bev even more excluded and, one can only assume, a ticking time-bomb until she has a total meltdown.

'Episodes' airs on Mondays at 10pm on BBC2. Watch 'Episode 3' until 22:59 Monday 28 Feb 2011. UK users only.
