Surfacing: Young Colossus [New Project]

It seems so long since I last heard any music involving Nic Nell, who I first wrote about in the early days of the blog. Five or so years on and he's teamed up with Orlando Weeks to produce a soundtrack accompaniment to a picture book envisioned by The Maccabees singer, entitled 'Young Colossus'. You can listen to its first track, 'Franky', below.

It's rare I lend my full support to a project after just one track but with fellow FG fave Alessi's Ark also in the mix for several of the six songs that come with the picture book, I have little doubt that Young Colossus are more hit than miss. Indeed, 'Franky' is an excellent introduction - absorbing, melancholic folk with a splash of Nic Nell flair on the production side.

Speaking of Nell, from what I've heard, he's been busy working with former Stricken City frontwoman Rebekah Raa - whose 'Tak O Tak' single dropped in at #35 of the FG Festive Fifty in 2008. In both cases, it's been too long since we've heard anything. But Nic's production work with Young Colossus is a welcome return and Rob Hunter's illustrations are vivid - Orlando Weeks should be pleased at how well his project has turned out.
