Futuresounds 2009

So I've been away preparing my tips for 2009 (not to be confused with the [futuresounds] blog) and to be honest, I'm still not entirely sure who I'll include. I've also set up a [Twitter] and a [tumblr]. I'm not sure I like tumblr all that much but Twitter is quite cool and I'm quite active on it. If you have something against "ones to watch" lists then you might want to look away now. I can't be bothered to argue about the merits of such a list, to me it's just another interesting aspect of the music industry.

Anyways, after last year's reasonably successful predictions, I'll be continuing in the same format. This mean that there'll be 12 choices: 4 hyped, 4 KHI faves and 4 newbies that I've never posted about here. I'll be writing about 1 of each category per post so it'll be a four part series. I was tempted to include a longlist but seeing as I'm not quite sure who I'm going to write about, I might put it in the final post. There will be no mention of Florence & The Machine because I think she's a twat.

White Lies
If you haven't noticed the morbidly attired and expressioned trio White Lies lately then clearly you've been staring at Little Boots too long. Can't blame you really. Nonetheless, White Lies have always had a fair bit of buzz around them, read more about that in [my interview] with their drummer, Jack. It's a bit strange for me to see their rise - I saw them as Fear Of Flying multiple times (including their earliest gigs as The Flow) and Charles was in the year below me at school - but I can envisage them playing stadiums by next year. Whether stardom awaits or not may be judged by the sales of their debut long player, 'To Lose My Life', out this week. Listen to it in full on their [MySpace].

Fight Like Apes
I've mentioned Oirish fight-poppers Fight Like Apes on this blog several times but not enough. I like their chutzpah. Hyperactive, bullish and altogether awesome, they're ready to take over the world. But no-one's really noticed yet. Well apart from their native pals with a Choice Music Prize nomination for their debut album. That album will be released next week in the UK and having heard it, I approve greatly. Synth-punk (it's better than it sounds) at its finest, take notice.

Red Light Company
To be honest, when I first heard Red Light Company, I thought they were a bit naff (naff is stylish lingo for not very good). But then I kept coming back to one of their tracks, 'With Lights Out'. Comparisons to Arcade Fire and Editors seem a tad over the top, I'm thinking more Snow Patrol at their most epic. Which is no bad thing. Soaring pop hits.

2008 Review

2008 saw me step up my blogging slightly, although I couldn't maintain the relentless pace of the first half of the year. I did two main features prior to the last few days - my annual tips for the forthcoming year and a guest blog series for the second birthday of Keep Hope Inside. Let's go through them for shits and giggles.

Futuresounds

After my 2007 tips were a bit too obscure and before their time, I decided to adopt a new method for choosing my tips for 2008. Having said that, Jack Penate, Foals and Laura Marling have done pretty well for themselves since early 2007! Anyways, this year I chose 12 bands - 4 of which were hyped at one point or another, 4 which had been mentioned on my blog previously and another 4 bands which I had never spoken about. Understandably there was a little overlap between the categories but let's have a look at the "success" of my tips.

[Part One]
Vampire Weekend did pretty sodding well, selling over 100,000 copies of their debut album in the UK. Alphabeat's 'Fascination' was a massive hit single and I was ready to herald them as a success until I heard they were dropped by EMI recently. Oops. But the saddest news comes in the form of Elle S'Appelle splitting, after just one single release. Download their final radio session [here].

[Part Two]
Adele became massive. And that's not even a fat joke. Still not really heard anything to match the quality of 'Hometown Glory' but I can't really dispute a #1 album which has sold over 500,000 copies in the UK. Jose Vanders and Agaskado Teliverek have made pretty much no impact on the mainstream at all.

[Part Three]
Glasvegas did rather well despite my initial concerns of their crossover appeal, a #2 album which sold over 100,000 copies. Look See Proof released their debut album to far more muted commercial response and The Wave Pictures continue to plug away quietly, although they did come third in The Guardian First Album award.

[Part Four]
Guillemots' second album wasn't very well received, although broke into the top ten of the UK album charts. Late Of The Pier's album received generally positive reviews although didn't result in a corresponding amount of album sales. Friendly Fires also released a generally well received album but failed to match LOTP's sales.

All in all, three of my hyped bands (Vampire Weekend, Glasvegas and Adele) justified their tags while the jury's out on the other acts. At least from a commercial perspective. Guillemots generated a fair amount of sales but critical acclaim left them - it will be interesting to see where they go from here. Unfortunately, it wouldn't surprise me if the likes of Late Of The Pier and Friendly Fires find themselves dropped before their second album.
