Surfacing: Young Kato [New Band]

Young Kato are an alternative pop sextet from Cheltenham and Birmingham, with not a qualm in the world about wearing the words POP MUSIC proudly on their sleeves. Although only averaging an age of 18, they have already received praise from the likes of Annie Nightingale and Gary Powell, drummer of The Libertines, as well as being donned "The Smiths with attitude".

On speaking to the band, they described their sound as follows: "We thrive upon catchy hooks and riffs in our songs, much like most of today’s pop music. [We] do think we’ve managed to achieve a respectable middle ground with the music as a whole. It’s given us somewhat of a gritty edge that is crucial for any up-and-coming band."

The band only dates back towards the end of last year when they played their first ever gig as Young Kato before an audience of 7,000 people in Bristol as a support act. April of this year found them signing to Manchester-based label LAB Records followed by the release of their debut self-titled EP in September.

Said EP was produced by none other than Gordon Mills Jr (Ed Sheeran, Placebo) with whom they co-wrote some of the songs, such as 'Lights' - download it for free at Bandcamp. Since then, the band have been contented playing 30 minute sets of pure adrenaline, leaving any audience in no doubt that pop music is in a revival. They hope to have an album out in 2013 so we've got plenty to look forward to.
