It's 25 years since the passing of iconic Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who died by suicide on April 5th 1994. His work has thankfully lived on, through records like 1991's seminal 'Nevermind', which acts almost as a rite of passage for any alternative-leaning teenage music fan. Its opening track, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', has been transformed into beguiling synthwave from Chinese outfit JUNKS.

Interestingly, JUNKS is led by David William Kay, whose Yorkshire-based Tiny Dancers featured back in the very earliest days of this website. A good decade on and he's moved both geographically and musically, fronting a retro-futuristic quartet in Hangzhou, inspired by eighties pop and sci-fi.

JUNKS' atmospheric 'Smells Like Chinese Teen Spirit' may have somewhat of a dubious name but perhaps appropriate, adding a Mandarin twist to the original's lyrics. Listen to the cover alongside 2018 self-titled JUNKS EP below, as well as a cut from Kay's DJ offshoot ECTOPLAZM.
