Pop Music Column #3: What If blink-182 Covered Billie Eilish's 'Bad Guy'?

Lil Nas X was finally dethroned from the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 this past week in the US by rising superstar Billie Eilish. What's even more absurd that the record-breaking 19 weeks at number one for 'Old Town Road' (great track, tbf) is that Eilish is still just seventeen. Seventeen! Arguably, even more absurd is the following cover of 'bad guy' in the style of blink-182.

new.wav - 'bad guy'

Ever since Tom DeLonge's acrimonious departure from blink-182 in 2015, we've been yearning for more old-school vibes from the band, and while the new line-up are understandably forging their own path, we're glad that Cameron Hurley is on hand for a burst of nostalgia. With a twist. In his new.wav guise, he's mashed together a version of Billie Eilish's chart-topping 'bad guy' in the style of blink-182. Which works surprisingly well.

Katy Perry - 'Small Talk'

Billie Eilish might be riding high on the Billboard Hot 100 but Katy Perry's new single (co-produced by Charlie Puth) is loitering at #81 - coming in for some surprisingly harsh criticism as a result. We think this one has legs though - after all, 'bad guy' spent nine weeks at #2 before reaching the zenith. Accompanied by Tim Fox's appropriately dainty lyric video, which is better than most official videos, 'Small Talk' is top pop.

Elderbrook & Rudimental - 'Something About You'

Another great song with a great video here, as director Luke Davies explores masculinity through the medium of dance for Elderbrook and Rudimental's 'Something About You'. Led by 'This Is England' actor Michael Socha, we see a group of men in a therapy session slowly explore their feelings in choreographed, synchronised dance. Rudimental adopt their usual big sound but also allow the track to breathe at times, with Elderbrook's soulful vocals instantly connecting on 'Something About You'.
