Lil Nas X was finally dethroned from the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 this past week in the US by rising superstar Billie Eilish. What's even more absurd that the record-breaking 19 weeks at number one for 'Old Town Road' (great track, tbf) is that Eilish is still just seventeen. Seventeen! Arguably, even more absurd is the following cover of 'bad guy' in the style of blink-182.

Our sporadic and loosely themed Pop Music Column makes a triumphant return! Possibly. This edition features pop icon Carly Rae Jepsen teaming up with producer Gryffin, relative newcomer Charlotte Lawrence, Taylor Swift and Twenty One Pilots - turns out there aren't even twenty one of them, only two. And they're probably not even pilots!

Glastonbury Festival ticked off another successful edition this past weekend, with a groundbreaking headline slot from Stormzy, but one moment has arguably dominated the talk surrounding Glasto 2019. And got us a bit emotional at the same time. Here's how a rapper named Dave and a fifteen year old fan called Alex came together to produce magic, and made us all escape our worldly worries for about six minutes. At least six minutes.

The dawn of a new era. The birth of a nation. Nah, just the start of a new column dedicated to new pop music. Partly inspired by this weekend's Eurovision Song Contest, which was controversial for a number of reasons, but also new tracks from the likes of Charli XCX, Gryffin, and Halsey. Oh and Slipknot, obvs.

The less you know about 'Room' (★★★★, 8/10), the better. Admittedly, director Lenny Abrahamson disagrees, hence the film's publicity (although not the video posted below) revealing significant plot details. However, we'll let you make the decision to investigate further or not.

Shura has been continuing her impressive rise, having appeared this week on the musical rite-of-passage that is 'Later With Jools Holland', while London quintet Pumarosa have been lighting up the blog world of late. Their sprawling, hypnotic seven minute debut single 'Priestess' gets a reworking from the typically more concise Shura.

US sitcom 'Broad City' has had some buzz so when 4music offered us the chance to view the opening episodes of the first series, we were there. 'Broad City' stars Abbi Jackson and Ilana Glazer, as two women trying to survive in New York as every day brings a new crazy situation for the girls to try and get themselves out of.

'Empire'

I have been going on about 'Empire' for a while now, which has been the talk of the town in the USA with a growing audience each episode. I did not believe this would be picked up by a UK channel until the end of the year but I was proven wrong by E4. 'Empire' reunites 'Hustle & Flow' stars Terence Howard and Taraji P Henson along with a range of R&B and hip hop stars to keep you glued to the screen.

We’ve been rather quiet of late but I like to think that is a reflection of the quality of the music that’s been released so far in 2015, which has demanded serious attention. To bring things up to date we’d like to share seven albums that should be heard, and so to leap straight in…
