How do you solve a problem like summing up the best songs of 2017 into an easily digestable list? Well, you take a while and then mercilessly cut it down to your top ten tracks of 2017. Showing my working, efforts like Mikey Me's advert-soundtracking 'Doin' Me' and Dan Black's dreamy return can count themselves unlucky to miss out. After much deliberation, here's my top ten of 2017:

Album Review: Zola Jesus - Versions

Zola Jesus - 'Versions' (UK Release: 19 Aug '13) // Words: Saam Das

It's rare that an album is inspired by a single live performance but such has been the case with the new Zola Jesus effort. Having been invited to perform at the Guggenheim Museum last year, Zola Jesus teamed up with JG Thirlwell to transform her largely electronic-led offerings into something more grandiose and orchestral. The result was stunning. And now appears in a newly recorded album, 'Versions'.

Last year, Nika Roza Danilova aka Zola Jesus was invited to perform at the world famous Guggenheim museum in New York. It resulted in a quite incredible collaboration between Nika and JG Thirwell, who brought an orchestral overtone to her existing electronic music. Such was the strength of their combined work that an album of those efforts is set to come out in August, led by the haunting 'Avalanche (Slow)'.

I imagine I'm one of a select group of bloggers to not have been impressed by either the recent return of Zola Jesus (download 'Vessel') or M83 (listen to 'Midnight City') yet now the two have come together, I can't get enough of it.
