Remixed is a column that will highlight remixes we actually think are worthy of praise, be they old or new. Because most remixes are rubbish. // Words: Saam Das
Queen's 'Don't Stop Me Now' is undoubtedly a bona fide classic. Consequently, messing with such a beloved song is almost certainly destined to fail. Yet I Am Harlequin has conjured perhaps one of the most triumphant remixes, not just of 'Don't Stop Me Now', but of all time. And from someone who despises the vast majority of remixes, that is quite the compliment. You really must download it below, before it disappears.
I Am Harlequin is the guise of German-born Londoner Anne Frier, whose single, 'The King's Daughter' we very much enjoyed at the end of last year. Arriving somewhere between the electro-pop of The Good Natured and the orchestral extravagance of Florence & The Machine, it's baffling as to why I Am Harlequin largely remains under the radar.
Perhaps this glorious remix will help Anne break that metaphorical glass ceiling. Magnificently melding electronica, evocative backing vocals, tribal rhythms and sweeping strings, while retaining Freddie Mercury's breathtaking vocals, the remix adds extra dimensions to the already exalted original. Courtney Love is claiming that "The Muppets raped Kurt Cobain's memory" when they humourously adapted 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' - only the most foolhardy of Queen fans would claim similarly in this case.
I managed to convince Anne to share her wonderful work with the world so you can now download 'Don't Stop Me Now (I Am Harlequin Choral Symphonic Remix)' for absolutely nothing in the Soundcloud widget below. For a limited time only, so snap it up. The track may well be my favourite remix ever. Perhaps it will be yours too. Do check out other I Am Harlequin tracks at Soundcloud.
