Ellie Goulding's 2010 debut album 'Lights' didn't quite live up to her initial promise. For me, at least. Her follow-up 'Halcyon' landed in October, and while I haven't had a chance to listen to the whole thing, new single 'Figure 8' is a thundering electro-pop smash. Listen below to one of the pop singles of the year.

The album's first single 'Anything Could Happen' re-invigorated my interest in Goulding, with particular thanks to a spectacular remix from Blood Diamonds. 'Figure 8' takes things up a notch. The swirling, enveloping production draws the listener in, before building quite incredibly.

Lyrically, 'Figure 8' reflects a break-up - quite probably her relationship with radio DJ, Greg James. Her recent relationship with Skrillex also comes to mind, with the track's perhaps surprising dubstep influence. We presume producers MONSTA and Mike Spencer are mostly responsible for that but we doff our cap in the direction of the duo, as well as Ellie, because 'Figure 8' is bloody brilliant.

'Figure 8' is out on 16 December. Find more info at elliegoulding.com.
