The Kübler-Ross model posits five stages of grief, namely denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Biffy Clyro appear to have bundled all of these stages into one song, covering Frightened Rabbit's 'The Modern Leper' for a new covers album organised by the remaining band members, following the devastating loss of frontman Scott Hutchison in May 2018.

I've been a naughty boy. The latest Frightened Rabbit album has escaped my listening, since its February release. The band are releasing a new EP tomorrow, partly to remind people about 'Pedestrian Verse' and partly to showcase some new tracks - including a collaboration with Manchester Orchestra. Check out a couple of versions of the title track from the 'Late March, Death March' EP below.

Today is Record Store Day, an annual worldwide independent music extravaganza. By the time you read this, you may already have returned from your outing, records in tow. Equally, you might not have set out - every day is something of a record store day, after all. Either way, here are some of our recommended special releases that have come out on Record Store Day 2013.

I can think of little else more melancholic than doing work spreadsheets and drinking a can of beer alone at 10.45pm. Frightened Rabbit are one of those few things that threaten to be more melancholic than my current plight. Their mix of emotionally devastating lyricism and quietly hopeful instrumentation is a joy in its own way. Here, they offer up a free Christmas download/single of sorts, 'She Screams Christmas'.

It was a bit of a surprise earlier in the year when it was announced that Scottish critical darlings Frightened Rabbit had signed to Atlantic Records. So far, so good though, and we're excited for their fourth studio album, 'Pedestrian Verse', due out in February. New track 'The Woodpile' suggests that their special brand of melancholia is as strong as ever.

Rightfully so, Scottish outfit Frightened Rabbit have been one of the most critically revered acts to come from our fair isles in the past decade. Sometime recently a major label cottoned onto that fact - and now Atlantic UK will be releasing their 'State Hospital' EP next month. Listen to the title track below.

You'll have heard the news of the destruction of the Sony DADC distribution centre in Enfield by now - we wanted to help support the independent music labels who have lost most of their stock as a result of the rioters in London. (Independent DVD companies have also been affected - see how you can help here.) Below is a 30 minute playlist covering some of our recommendations of tracks/albums that you can purchase to support the labels.

Frightened Rabbit are probably one of my top 5 favourite bands. Over the course of their two studio albums, they've demonstrated the wonderful Scottish melancholy that sets in when it seemingly rains all the time. Or maybe that's just been my several unlucky experiences in Scotland.

A new album is on its way, preceded by the 'Swim Until You Can't See Land' single. The horns and string arrangements give the single a wonderful richness but I can't help feeling that it's a little tepid in comparison to Frightened Rabbit's previous output. It's a decent effort but I'm hoping there'll be a bit more bite to the album.

The signs aren't great, though. In a MySpace blog post, they describe the single as "summing up the record". In effect, I'm asking the band to be a bit more passionately miserable. Is that an oxymoron? Maybe I mean miserably passionate. Either way, fairly shameful on my part.

Perhaps of more pressing interest, the band are playing a secret gig at The Lexington in London on the 6th. Tickets are being sold online from 9am on Monday 2nd Nov. That's tomorrow folks. Set your alarms. If like me you are sadly preoccupied at that moment in time, you can imagine what it'd be like from this clip on the BBC2 Culture Show. I've ripped the mp3 below.

'Swim Until You Can't See Land' is available to preorder now at FatCat Records prior to its 16th Nov release.
