DVD: 'Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans' (Release: 27 September 2010)
Director: Werner Herzog
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Xzibit
Abel Ferrara made a 1992 film, starring Harvey Keitel, called 'Bad Lieutenant'. Upon hearing about this new Werner Herzog version, Ferrara didn't exactly lend his support: "I wish these people die in Hell. I hope they're all in the same streetcar, and it blows up." Glad to see film makers are still staying classy. Herzog's response to Ferrara's bile was somewhat bizarre: "I have no idea who he is", while also denying that his film was a remake of Ferrara's.

Festival: Offset 2010 (4th-5th September 2010)
Considering Offset is a festival made up largely of hipsterer-than-thou types from hipsterer-than-thou Hoxton, it’s actually got a pretty good atmosphere. Although everyone’s obviously put a lot of thought into making sure they look a different shade of alternative, there is obviously a passion for all sorts of music there, which means that even the stranger sounding bands, of which there are quite a few, attract decent and appreciative crowds.

'Enter The Void' (UK Release: 24 September)
Director: Gaspar Noé
Cast: Paz de la Huerta, Nathaniel Brown, Cyril Roy
Gaspar Noé's 'Enter The Void' is the most horrible film I have ever seen. My assessment isn't that it is badly made, technically incompetent or cheap. It's evident that it is very finely, very precisely crafted. It is a detailed and very deliberate work, even boasting some suitably organic and attractive visual effects.
Unfortunately, none of these attributes prevent it from often being a thoroughly horrid cinematic experience. The most positive comment I can make about 'Enter The Void' is that its very best moments are merely mildly engaging. Otherwise, it's alternately boring or bullying its viewers. When it's boring, it's dull as can be. The rest of the time it's busy being a horrid, excessive and sustained assault on both your senses and your sanity. Let me try to explain how this film made me feel both physically and mentally unwell.
'Enter The Void' is about a brother and sister tightly bonded by the tragedies they have endured. They move to Japan in an attempt to fulfil a childhood dream, but to make ends meet the brother finds himself trading drugs and the sister becomes an exotic dancer. Then, the brother is shot and his dying mind hallucinates its way through the past, present and future. Much of this is shot from the brother's point of view, using a first-person perspective and internal narration. At other times it features Noé's characteristic giddying crane work and gliding, spinning transitions which have the camera flying over buildings, passing through walls and, at one point, flying up the sister’s vagina.

Crocodiles - 'Sleep Forever' (Release: 13 September)
'Sleep Forever' starts rather encouragingly, with opener 'Mirrors' beginning with a big krautrock rhythm and some exciting swirling guitars that are seemingly the beginning of a crescendo that will lead to something wondrously epic.

I didn't get press accreditation to this year's London Film Festival. Then again, I didn't apply. They did, however, kindly invite me to some fancy press do but I couldn't attend that either and you could read about it at Ultraculture, if you fancy. But that's enough of this self-indulgent rubbish, LET THE RECOMMENDATIONS BEGIN.

Black Mountain - 'Wilderness Heart'
(13 September)
Black Mountain's sophomore album 'In The Future'
(from 2008) was one of my favorite albums of the 21st century's first decade. I think that 'Wilderness Heart', their third album, is even better.

Action films generally get a bad rep but I love me some action films. Sure, every time a film like 'The Expendables' comes along, the medium of film is perhaps sullied. However, action movies can be high concept, high calibre, well executed films. Maybe we can't quite say for every 'Transformers 2', there's an 'Inception' or 'The Matrix' but "action" (if used as a genre label) needn't be looked down upon.
In what I hope well be a fairly regular feature, I'll be showcasing some of my favourite fight scenes.

Bayonets - 'Bayonets' (Release: 20th September)

The debut Bayonets album – 'Wishes & Wishes' - was pretty good although hardly groundbreaking. The album reminded me of 'Ideas Above Our Station' by Hundred Reasons – both for its content and its sense of a significant new arrival. But where Surrey’s finest seemed to buckle under the weight of expectation, Bayonets from Herefordshire have kicked on and this second album is really remarkable.

Contrasting the previous couple of months, August was a splendid month singles-wise. Conversely, real life wasn't as splendid with my inevitably slow march toward completion of my postgraduate dissertation. [insert antonym of fun here]. 15,000 words later, that chapter of my life is now over and I apologise for the hideously unpunctual production of this round up. Especially as this has maybe been the best month for singles this year.
The singles bounty was so plentiful that I'm leaving out such stellar singles as Best Coast's 'Boyfriend' and 'Echoes' by Klaxons. I'm sure they won't mind. I should also mention the Entrepeneurs release that Jehan of the recently deceased Shattered Satellite blog has put out and old favourites of this blog Pull In Emergency's new single. But enough of that, ONWARDS. Oh, actually, one last note for Hipster Hitler, which I don't think quite hit the big time. Well, I didn't see anyone up in arms about it. Singles reviews after the jump.

Film School 101 highlights overlooked aspects of film and television to enhance your understanding and appreciation of the screen. Well, that's the idea anyway.

Think about the last film that you watched. Has the fact that pictures can move ever amazed you? Probably not. Every day people see moving images, but they never think twice about it because it is so commonplace. Movies are now a standard form of entertainment, but they were never meant to entertain. It is a billion-dollar industry, but nobody thought that could ever happen. Everyone knows Hollywood, yet it has nothing to do with the creation of the medium itself. So let’s rewind, and go back to 1872.

This post is just a quick reminder about the Jack Daniels competition we're running on the website. It's probably be the best competition we'll ever run!
The prize is a night's stay in a London hotel for you and a pal, £100 towards travel expenses, a Jack Daniels goody bag, and two tickets for the JD Birthday Gig featuring Jarvis Cocker, Richard Hawley, Ellie Goulding and Duane Eddy. That all happens on October 7th but the deadline for entries is the September 24th, just days away. Head over to the post for entry details.
In the meantime, have a mash up which mixes Ellie Goulding's 'Starry Eyed' and The Jackson 5 'I Want You Back'. Still not sure about Ellie Goulding's vocal style but it's pretty difficult to make The Jackson 5 sound anything other than fun. Look out for a new (irregular) feature highlighting our favourite mash ups in the near future.

'Grandma's House' Episode Six: 'The Day Simon Finally Found the Strength to Accept that His Mother Was Getting Married'
SYNOPSIS: "When Grandpa is taken ill, it's unsure whether Tanya and Clive will be able to get married today. Grandma takes on the responsibility of trying to resolve the situation, but is she right to advise Tanya to get married? Meanwhile, Liz has a favour to ask of Simon which might help Adam sort out his schooling problems." (bbc.co.uk)
"I can't help but think we're headed towards some sort of climactic implosion next week". I don't mean to say that I told you so but, well, I was right.

I don't know anything about Lazy Hurricane, other than they have appeared on the brilliant new Tough Love free sampler album. Seriously, check out that label. 'No Fair Isle' is a bit all over the place. But in a good way. Futuristic calypso pop? Maybe. At least until I can think of a better way to describe this ridiculously bouncy, confounding hodgepodge.
'No Fair Isle' packs in the ideas. They don't always work out. Nonetheless, there's enough here to look forward to whatever Lazy Hurricane come up with next.

'Grandma's House' Episode Five: 'The Day Simon Felt the Family Was Ready to Be Healed'
SYNOPSIS: "Simon has been on a life-changing course and has decided it's his job to heal the family. He starts by giving his Granddad an exercise ball. Tanya has had a realisation that maybe Clive isn't the man for her, and when the family discover that Simon has organised a surprise for them, they are fearful what Grandma might do to him."
I think Simon Amstell's fictional alter-ego is finally coming apart at the seams. I'm only surprised that it hasn't happened sooner.

'Scott Pilgrim vs. The World' (2010)
Director: Edgar Wright
Cast: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Ellen Wong
Let’s get one thing clear: 'Scott Pilgrim vs. The World' will not be a universally-loved classic. It will not be well-received by the majority of the cinema-going public. The reason for this is that it is a niche movie. It is a celebration of all things geek, and is too quirky for an audience expecting a conventional summer flick. The film's mediocre showing at the box office is perhaps an indication of its advertising, which has alienated the mainstream. With that out the way, let’s get talking about marmite.
