Are You Listening Festival (Reading, 23 April '16) // Words: Saam Das

It's fair to say that Reading's Are You Listening? Festival is somewhat overshadowed by its geographically similar August-held music festival. But perhaps it shouldn't be. At just £15 for dozens of top notch bands across various venues, and none of the logistic issues of camping and what not, Are You Listening is certainly worth investigating.

Big Deal's forthcoming second album is called 'June Gloom', perhaps taunting all of the UK while we try to navigate the rather dreary May weather. Oddly enough, their new single 'Dream Machines' seems to (at least metaphorically) opening up the clouds and shining upon our withered souls. Have a listen below, along with the more psych-influenced recent single, 'In Your Car'.

Big Deal - 'Lights Out' (UK Release: 5 September '11) //

2011 seems to be the year of boy-girl duos (see Tennis, Cults, Summer Camp, Best Coast, Cat's Eyes etc) and though Big Deal have already gained comparisons with the folk-rock Slow Club, the duo of Alice Costelloe and Kacey Underwood just seem to be their distant relations in the boy-girl genre.

It's September. Already. Another month goes by and another singles column is complete. As ever, ten of the best singles of the month and no dating advice to be seen anywhere. Or at least not here. Because that would be terrible. Anyway, the photo above hints at the winner of the August single of the month. To listen to that track and more, keep reading.

April's been a bit of a ridiculous month for the singles round up with Record Store Day dominating proceedings. Several special, limited edition singles came out on April 16th this year and well, it'd be a nightmare going through all of those on top of my bursting lists of regular singles. So I might have missed the odd amazing single but here's a selection of very good ones anyway.

For the 2011 Camden Crawl mixtape I put together for Mud Hut Digital, which Nathan from Mud Hut guided you through, every single band/act I chose had already featured on the site. Meaning that the podcast would be a bit redundant for regular readers. So here's some other picks for the festival, and their set times/stage listings too.
