The Candle Thieves - 'Sunshines And Other Misfortunes'

"It won’t change your life, but it’s certainly a jolly nice listen."

This fantastic looking short film was made by Ricardo de Montreuil, for a mere $5000.

The Raven (production still)

"Chris Black possesses a power that could lead to the destruction of the current regime, and they will stop at nothing to destroy him. The chase is on as Chris runs for his life in this sci-fi thriller set in an alternate and futuristic Los Angeles".

99.9% of remixes are utter gash. So it brings me great pleasure when I actually hear a decent one, and even more so when I can share it with all of you.

Clock Opera (Photo Credit: Anna Batchelor)
This remix brings together the incredible talents of Marina & The Diamonds and Clock Opera. Marina always looked destined for success (and her debut album 'The Family Jewels' pretty much shits all over the likes of Ellie Goulding and Kate Nash's recent mixed efforts) but Guy Connelly and his Clock Opera outfit are much less of a cert. Yet almost every song I hear from Clock Opera is better than the last.

I think this week I've seen a higher density of weird and creepy film trailers than for the rest of the year combined. Although that doesn't include the new Twilight ('The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' as it is better known to the insanely rabid fans of the series) trailer. Which I'm definitely not linking to. Ever.

Em

I seriously wish I knew more about this Polish(?) film. The trailer is cut brilliantly and in my mind, 'Em' is a bit like 'The Matrix' meets 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' with a splash of David Lynch. This English subbed trailer currently has a criminal 563 views on YouTube. A must watch.

The Last Airbender
[Trailer]

The final trailer for M Night Shyamalan's new film (based on the 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' cartoon) is out. The action still looks great but the main protagonist Aang still sounds like a "middle aged lesbian", as one facetious film website commentator mentioned. In fact, the conspicuous lack of acting throughout the set of trailers is somewhat worrying.

Win tickets to The JD Set in London (on May 5th) when Shy Child, Infadels, The Shortwave Set, Kids On Bridges & The Pipettes make music history and reinterpret The Human League’s seminal album ‘Dare’. Each prize winner will receive a pair of tickets as well as a Jack Daniel’s goody bag. Not bad.

Okay, so there's some Icelandic volcanic ash cloud thing floating somewhere around the atmosphere but other than that, the weather's been quite lovely in old Blighty lately. Which brings me to Sheffield's All The Damn Kids and a brilliant free download they're giving away. Cheers, guys.

Film: The Long Good Friday (1980)

Director: John Mackenzie
Cast: Bob Hoskins, Helen Mirren, Bryan Marshall, Eddie Constantine

Good Friday may already have passed but let me tell you about what is surely one of the best British films ever made, and also the one that launched the big-screen career of one of Britain’s best actors, Bob Hoskins. I’d better be quick, there’s a remake in the works and I need to convince you to see the original while it still remains untarnished and unmarred by whatever inevitable pish is released.

I was going to tell you a bit about Harry Granger-Howell's old band Video Nasties, since I saw them unexpectedly evolve over the course of about five years, but he's moved on and I guess I should too. Harry now goes under the moniker Lonely Galaxy and has his debut release, 'EP1', out on Transparent next week.

The 'Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare' series of video games is one of the most popular of all time. But even if you've never encountered the series, you can still enjoy this short fan made film inspired by the video games. The dubbing might be fairly obvious but for $200, this is pretty great. Part II is supposedly on its way soon.

Song: 'My Destiny' by Andrew WK

Andrew WK aged 17 years old

Last week, cult pop star/wacky personality Andrew WK shared a song from his youth that had been hidden away since the 1990s on The Guardian website. Not only that, he told the story about how 'My Destiny' resulted in a juvenile restraining order.

MGMT - 'Congratulations'

Time to catch up with some recent trailers and desperately avoid ones like Sex And The City 2.

The Losers (UK - 28 May // US - 23 April)

If you go by trailers, I think this one firmly tops the recent A Team and The Expendables offerings, despite all three films feeling like nuanced versions of the bloody same thing. But 'The Losers' has Zoe Saldana and they are marketing the hell out of that. I guess they know their audience well.

The Heavy (UK - 16 April)

This independent British film features Sir Christopher Lee and Stephen Rea. But it also features Lee Ryan from Blue and Vinnie Jones sporting extremely suspect facial hair. The trailer makes it appear like something out the 'Grand Theft Auto' video game series. So there's potential there to be a bad ass action flick.

Competition time! I'm a big fan of Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip and in particular, Scroobius Pip's amazing observational lyrics. He's got a new book out and I've got a copy to give away. ILLUSTRATIONS! NICK FROST! GRAPHIC NOVEL? Details on how to win after the jump.

Easter is a time for chocolate eggs and stories about some Spanish bloke called Jesus. I have a story of my own to share today. Obviously, a York Notes (or Cliffs Notes if you're an American) version so I don't bore you to death.

Film: Kick-Ass (2010)

Director: Matthew Vaughn
Cast: Aaron Johnson, Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz

Spoiler-free review of the brilliantly fun 'Kick-Ass' below, made for an astonishing $28 million (according to Matthew Vaughn).

Dave Lizewski (Johnson) is a teenager at high school. He's not the jock. He's not the mathlete. He's not even the funny one in his small group of friends. Dave has heady dreams though. He wants the hot girl. More so, he wants to be a superhero. But this is also a world where a 12 year old girl uses the "c" word (yep, cunt) freely, severs limbs with glee and gets punched in the head by a 45 year old man. This is Mark Millar's comic book series 'Kick-Ass', brought to the screen by Matthew Vaughn.

If you read other music blogs, you're probably a bit sick of Delorean now. They do appear to be the "buzz band du jour". But the fact I'm still posting this should till you that they deserve the attention. And they've been around for about ten years so they've earnt it.

Film: 'Fail-Safe' (1964)

Director: Sidney Lumet
Cast: Henry Fonda, Dan O'Herhily, Walther Matthau, Dom DeLuise

Without doubt one of my most treasured films, made by one of my favourite directors, Sidney Lumet, this is less a film about conflict itself and more one about the decisions made far away from the front lines. 'Fail-Safe' came out at roughly the same time as 'Dr. Strangelove' and critics are going to tell you the latter is the better film. It is, of course, all about personal preference, but I’m going to tell you a little secret, and that little secret is that 'Fail-Safe' is actually superior. Don’t share that with anyone.
